DEFINITION:
To perform technical accounting work in the preparation, maintenance, and processing of accounting records and financial transactions.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Controller class is distinguished from classes in the Account Clerk series by the difficulty and complexity of work performed including the posting of data to the general ledger and journals, preparation of journal vouchers and reconciliation of expenditures and subsidiary accounts.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by the Director of Business Services and exercises supervision of the following services:
Accounts Payable
Purchasing
Payroll
Food Services Accounting
District Student Attendance Accounting
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Coordinates the district data processing services.
Participates in the preparation of financial statements, schedules, and other statistical and financial reports, and prepares and maintains complex accounting clerical records.
Participates in central accounting functions such as allocating designated account expenditures and preparing journal vouchers.
Audits and approves availability of funds on purchase orders; may input data on accounts payable to initiate preparation of warrants for payment.
Examines, reconciles, balances, and adjusts accounting records.
Identifies and resolves problems and inconsistencies, determining corrective entries involved in maintaining accounting controls.
Prepares a variety of State, Federal, and local statements, reports and tax returns from a variety of data and records.
Answers questions and advises on procedures in preparing accounting transactions.
Prepares and submits accounting information for input into computerized system; reconciles differences between accounting records and computerized reports.
Serves as liaison to independent auditors in preparation of annual audit.
Coordinates accounting activities with other District offices and the County office of Education.
Performs related duties as assigned. Supervises and evaluates accounting staff.
KNOWLEDGE OF:

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance of financial, fiscal and related statistical records.
Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelor of Science Degree with major course work in accounting and business practices.
