Under direction of the Chief Business Official, coordinates and supervises the development and execution of daily, short-term and long-term planning and facility improvement projects including maintenance repair and alteration of school buildings; monitors and manages facility renovation and new construction projects and represents the District in all areas for these projects; plans and supervises a District-wide maintenance program including the upkeep and maintenance of the school grounds and landscaped areas; coordinates, directs and evaluates the work of maintenance and grounds personnel; and to do job-related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other job-related duties may be assigned. Provides direction on proper methods of building and grounds maintenance; coordinates major maintenance and modernization schedules to create the least possible impact on educational programs; plans, coordinates and supervises the work of maintenance personnel in the maintenance, repair and remodeling of school buildings, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating and air conditioning and electric work; reviews, determines priority and assigns work orders to maintenance personnel; plans and directs the maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, plants, playing fields and parking lots in the district; ensures District compliance with environmental laws and regulations; responsible for the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program and Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) compliance; performs or assists subordinates in the performance of their duties and assists them to solve problems that arise; prepares annual budget requests for the facilities and maintenance departments; directs, supervises, coordinates, trains and formally evaluates facilities and maintenance personnel; prepares reports suitable for presentation to the Board of Education.

Knowledge of school law and applicable government and administrative codes that pertain to school finance, safety, risk management, fixed assets, purchasing and records retention, construction and maintenance, including a knowledge of safe work practices and workplace safety; principles and techniques of building inspection; provisions of the Uniform Building, Plumbing and Electrical Codes and State and County health codes relating to the construction and alteration of school facilities; facilities planning and finance, construction, preventative, corrective and deferred maintenance; budgetary and recordkeeping practices; materials, equipment, working procedures and methods required in a school district building and grounds maintenance; scheduling and evaluating personnel; and operation of modern office equipment including computers and a variety of software applications.
Ability to read, understand and apply information from federal, state and local laws and regulations; prioritize work in order to meet multiple deadlines and maintain schedules; determine the need for maintenance and repairs and to plan and schedule for such work; plan, coordinate and direct the work of subordinates performing maintenance and repair duties; estimate costs of school construction and maintenance work; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; deal effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring tact, good judgment and poise; take responsibility and use good judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
B.A. or B.S. degree or equivalent from an accredited university in project management, construction, architecture, civil engineering, public administration, business administration or a related technical field or California Contractor License. Five years of experience in maintenance, or facility management; or five years of journey level experience in one or more of the building trades, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity. School district experience, ability to read blue prints, ability to obtain appropriate certificates (i.e., asbestos, lead, etc.) desirable. Must possess a valid California driver’s license. Employees in this classification that drive District vehicles must authorize the State Department of Motor Vehicles to disclose or otherwise make driver’s record available.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to prepare complete and concise verbal and written reports.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages and ratios to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must possess a valid California driver’s license. Employees in this classification that drive District vehicles must authorize the State Department of Motor Vehicles to disclose or otherwise make driver’s record available.
